Building Confidence – Embrace Your Worth

Daily writing prompt
What’s the best way to build self-confidence?

This is a hard one. Building self-confidence is challenging, especially if you are not innately confident. Interestingly, people who desire higher levels of self-confidence often struggle with low self-esteem and a low sense of self-worth. Because of these self-perceptions, there may be a desire to show up more assertively and confidently in the world. Let’s face it, some people walk into rooms confidently, socialize boldly, and exchange ideas with others without missing a beat. But for many, this is quite a challenge. I believe that confidence for some is built when we develop a true awareness of our God-given talents, gifts, and skills, and when we commit to living out our purpose. Let me explain. When you are in tune with who you are created to be, which includes what talents and gifts you have and how you use them, you can be sure that if you develop them along your journey, your confidence will grow. The goal is to truly embrace your uniqueness, and you will see yourself develop a higher level of self-esteem and self-worth. Know that the more you try to be who you are not in the name of becoming more confident, you will not see the success you are looking for. But when you show us in your God-given purpose with your God-given talents, gifts, and skills on display, you will experience confidence as you show up in alignment with who you are called to be.

Changing How You Think Changes Your Life

What book could you read over and over again?

The Laws of Thinking by Bishop E Bernard Jordan was a pivotal book for me because it taught me how to see myself as one with God and channel my innate ability to create the life that I desire. This book helped me to get past my limited beliefs and prompted me to see myself as having the power to create just as God does because He and I are one. So powerful!

Inhale……Exhale….Inhale…..Exhale….

The years have brought an immense amount of challenges, which at the word ‘go’ you believed you had the strength to overcome. And you did, at the beginning. But the weight of what was to come and the toll it began to take on your whole being, mind, body, and soul was too great to overcome, then. Promises you made to yourself to become better, stronger, more equipped, and healed began to fade as you entered the path before you. In the midst of each crisis, stronger than the one before, your own promises seemed to betray you. What were you thinking, that you could come out of your struggles with no bumps or bruises better than when you went in? Each day, you wondered if God was on your side. You had paid your dues. Or had you? What is this all about? You found yourself stuck in the uncertainty, asking questions for which there seemed to be no answers. Each day, you had to problem solve, to channel your inner faith while at the same time de-escalating your emotions, resisting the urge to say the words, ‘I have failed’, ‘this must be all there is for me’. Not days, not weeks, not months, but for years you have vacillated between promise, thoughts of failure, dismay, and disappointment. The challenge here is assessing your tenacity and endurance. This is not the end.

Allowing moments to reignite your passions and refocus your thoughts on your purpose helps in this process. But, before you get to that point, you have to channel your energy into strengthening your resolve, reminding yourself that you CAN do this. Keeping your hope alive is real, and it must be part of this process of refocusing your energy on what you believed in the beginning: that you would come out on the other side better, stronger, more equipped, and healed. That doesn’t happen by chance. It takes focus, intention, and a plan to remind yourself daily that you are better than your circumstances. Believing is one thing; living it out is quite the challenge. Begin with what you want to see, then work back from there. People do this in many different ways. What is most important is that you spend more time thinking about what you want to be true in your life, rather than what is happening that has caused you sadness, disappointment, and even grief.

It really is about positive energy and refusing to focus on what isn’t working in your favor. There is power in reflection and discovering some of the whys behind your struggles. This will not prevent you from future challenges, but it will help you see yourself more clearly, grow as a person, and channel your positive energy to show up in the world around you in the way you desire. Rearrange your morning routine to refocus your daily intentions, refuse to get stuck in the disappointments, and continue to build the path that leads to the next hope, even if only in your mind. Write it, dream it, think it, believe it, daily. Your challenges may have affected you in ways you’ve never experienced before. You may feel lost and hopeless, but know that your thoughts and words have power. Often, we spend much of our lives trying to fix what is wrong, which leaves us placing an overwhelming amount of brainpower and emotion on it. In these moments, we do not realize that this may be why we continue to experience things at the same level, even when we thought we had overcome. Retrain your brain first to stop thinking about your unfortunate experiences. Be mindful of the words you speak when talking about your circumstances to others. You will struggle at first, but keep trying. Instead, think about what you want to happen. Continue to rethink a situation when you notice that you are starting to focus on the negative. What may come as a surprise is that, as you think positive thoughts about what you desire, you will notice yourself becoming more hopeful. With each day, your hope grows, and your emotions follow. This is when emotional intelligence is key. Learning how to respond emotionally in various situations creates momentum for forward movement.

Believe in the existence that you want to create in your life. You may have to channel your inner child and write, draw, paint, or assemble to make your vision plain so that you can see it as possible while still fighting your inner fears, shortcomings, and past failures. Nothing is more valuable than YOU believing in YOU. When you see the light, and you will, take a moment to breathe. Inhale….Exhale…Inhale….Exhale. Resist the natural urge to keep stressing about not being where you want to be. Embrace the light that you see, the hope that is there, to continue to push you to the next level of your journey. Create space in your day to remind yourself that you have come a long way and you have everything that you need to speak to what is next for you. There will always be difficulties that challenge us in ways that we never imagined, but there are also great promises that exist and cannot be actualized until you usher them into your life with hope, faith, and a belief that you are worth it. The journey is long and hard, and often the rewards seem to pale in comparison to what you have suffered, but know that when you place your focus on what you desire instead of what has hurt you, you can breathe because you know relief is on the way.

Brushing off Criticism, Disrupting Negative Self- Talk

Criticism can be the very thing that brings us down to a place where we identify with our own feelings of inadequacy and insecurity. It’s in those places that we allow the words of others to find a way into our psyche, impacting our emotions and our ability to live up to our potential. It is in these moments that criticism takes root and settles in seeking opportunities to remind you of who you are not, what you cannot do and that you a powerless to change any of it. Simultaneously, negative self-talk awakens, finding new opportunities to be the first to confirm that the words from the voices of criticism are, in fact, true and that this is just how it is.

Wow! What place to be, sandwiched between the criticisms of others and your own negative self-talk. Whatever positivist you had left in your life, making your way through one challenge just to enter the next, is now gone for sure. You have now officially internalized the exact opposite of what you know of yourself, who you are and what you contribute to your own life and the world around you. Before you know it you find yourself doubting your passion, your purpose and whether or not there is really a place for you to thrive in environments you seek to be in.

I know this story quite well. It has been a part of my existence for quite some time. Just when I think it no longer matters what people say, it does. Someone says something that totally dismantles the barriers I thought I had set up. Just like that, I am back, entertaining criticism and my own negative self-talk, taking it all in, making it real, giving it a place deep inside as if God had not already put something else deep down within me for which he called me to do.

I know God has placed something down on the inside, so now that I know that the power of God is stronger than any other power, then I should be able to get over this in no time. Right? Wrong! While maybe it should, the battle of overcoming criticism and negative self-talk doesn’t end there. What we all know is that there will always be people who will talk and will always have those things that we say to ourselves that are fair from the truth. Just like we teach our children that life is full of ups and downs, but they can overcome it. Truthfully, It is often easier for me to teach and lift up others while I am in my own head thinking, “What in the world?!” about my own struggles. The fact of the matter is that sometimes life challenges are so very difficult that we actually don’t know what to do. When those challenges are accompanied by criticisms from others and our own negative self-talk, the struggle becomes unbearable at times. But this is where the work has to be done

This is not a blog post about dissecting the criticisms of others. Criticisms will be there. The hard truth is that we all have participated in giving our opinions, our thoughts and even our criticisms to others about what we think for the benefit of others. Let’s be real, our own criticism of others has not always been positive. We all have to work on that as a part of our growth journey. You can not participate in a process that you loathe for your own life. You should add to someone and not take away.

So, if you want to continue to grow personally in life, you have to first decide if you are going to entertain criticism in any way, good or bad. If you decide that you’re not gonna listen to anything anyone else has to say, then simply let them know you are not interested in learning what they have to say and respectfully change the subject or turn around and walk away. But if you decide that you are open to hearing them out, you have to be able to do two things well: 1)listen to what is being said and decide if it aligns with what you know about yourself (notice that I said what you know about yourself and not what you tell yourself about yourself which is often that negative self-talk) 2)What are you going to do with the criticism that is shared. If it is negative, are you going to accept it, internalize it, and when you get in your quiet space, stew over it, or are you going to hear it, internalize it? If it doesn’t align with who you are, are you going to choose not to entertain that person’s words about you? If it is positive (which I’d prefer to call feedback), is it aligned with who you are again, not what you tell yourself about who you are, and is there something that was spoken to you that you could use to further your passion in your purpose, your goals or in your life?

This is also not a post about dissecting negative self-talk. But this is a post about you being true, not to your negative self-talk or, of course, the criticisms of others, but to YOU. It is in moments when I’m feeling frustrated, angry, sad, disappointed, or overwhelmed that I realize I should be committed to =doing the work to reflect who I am and what I am here to do. Each and every time, I find myself going back to the foundation of what God has placed down in me for the work that he has called me; when I listen and get back to business every time, without fail, I feel inspired, motivated and empowered.

What I have learned is that I have to create my life in such a way that I am consciously doing the work that I have been called to do. When I decide that I’m tired, not feeling it, not today or who cares what I have to say or write, not only do I fall behind, but I am not watering the seed of what He gave me to do. I notice that when I am operating who I am, I can hear criticisms from others, but my negative self-talk is not buying into the shenanigans. Let me say that in a different way. Even though people may share criticisms, if anything is said that does not align with who I am, it falls on deaf ears because my focus is on doing those things that I have been called to do; therefore, there is no room for negative self-talk. There is no space for it. It doesn’t belong at the moment. It doesn’t even come to the forefront of my mind. But, if I choose to slow down and back off from doing the work, then I open up the space again for the criticisms and the negative self-talk to join in and have an all-out party at my expense and that of who I have been chosen to serve.

In summary, people will always have something to say, good or bad. You can choose to listen and grow, or you can decide not to listen at all and grow in your own unique way. That choice is up to you, But you must remember that with anything spoken to you, feedback or criticism, you want to make sure that there is alignment between what is being said and what you’re hearing. Then, be careful that you don’t allow your own negative self-talk to piggyback on any criticisms and derail your efforts to operate doing what you have been called to do. You must find time every day to take steps that lead to doing what God called you to do, even if it’s just one thing. Why? This will help to keep you from internalizing criticism and spinning that self-talk in your mind all day long. Hear me out; you must find time to do the work you have been called to do, even if it is outside of your daily employment. This is one of your best defenses against internalizing all of the negativity that may come your way because it’s something about when you know your purpose and you know you are operating in your purpose, nothing negative that anyone says, even what you say to yourself has a leg to stand on.

Mastering the Process of Planning for the Life You Desire

We can only sometimes see what we desire to achieve. It’s just not that easy. We go to bed with high hopes of waking up the next day and bringing to life everything we envisioned would happen the night before. But when we wake up, we are reminded that everything is the same. Nothing seems to have changed, and the once optimistic view of our life has now reverted to wishing, hoping, and praying that things would be different.

The truth is that achieving the life you desire takes planning. There is a process to breaking the code to enter the next phase of your life. It is not enough to hope, wish, and pray; there must be action. But first, you must know where you are and understand where you are going. Often, this is where we get stuck. We need to see where we are and know the actual details of where we want to go.

Plan Your Life, Live Your Goals

Reflecting on where you are is essential to planning the life you desire. Once you understand where you are, including the circumstances that brought you here, you can better decide where you want to go from here and outline a plan to get there. It is important to commit to planning, evaluating, and reflecting as you live your desired life.

Once you have developed a habit of planning your daily activities, evaluating progress toward your goals, and reflecting on the processes you have put in place, you can see what needs to be adjusted. In the meantime, you must activate your faith and believe that you can accomplish what you set out to do. Having a plan alone is not enough. Your faith will stand when your plans fall through, or you get off track. This will keep your head up, eyes forward, and focused on the goal.

We all desire to achieve great things. The path forward is not the same for everyone, but a few things hold true for those who seek to grow, develop, and live the life they desire. You must not only put a plan in place but perfect the practice of executing the plan you put in place. We must also develop a thick skin for the fight as the road will take work. Most importantly, faith and belief that what we desire is attainable for us as long as it is aligned with our life’s purpose is a significant part of the journey.

Feeling Better

What is the cost of prioritizing your mental and emotional well being? It is possible that during parts of our lives, we failed to recognize the importance of ensuring that the damage to our souls was not all consuming of our entire existence? That which we put in the hands of others was returned to us more damaged than when we came. So at what point can we say that are we have escaped the patterns of toxicity in our lives, that we are feeling better?

Feeling better about where you are really about getting to the point of recognizing that we are the only ones who we can hold responsible and accountable for caring for our mental and emotional state. Once we have internalized the reality that people may not have the capacity to create a safe space for our mental and emotional health, we are on the path forward. Honestly, that’s our job. This is how we show our inner self that we truly love ourselves. But we have to come to a point when we can say that we loved ourselves enough to separate from that which is no longer serving us so that we can enter into a space where we can flourish fully.

Timing is important but the realization that a change has to be made and the courage to do it presents more challenges than can be anticipated. The road to feeling better is not just about making changes, its about living it. Its about being able to breath in the fresh air of healing along with the feelings associated with having the freedom to make the choices that serve you and your life goals. That’s is feeling better.

The Courage to Believe

My response to the daily post describing a family member….

When I was young, it was my grandmother (Big Mama as we affectionately called her) that took pride in my gift of writing as if it was her own. I would write about EVERYTHING from feelings of insecurity to disagreements with friends to breakups with boyfriends. It was my way of coping with my feelings.

Putting my feelings on paper has always been therapy for me. Writing my feelings in the form of poetry was my thing back then! Early on my writing wasn’t the highest quality. Looking back at a poem I wrote to my sister while she was in college brought out quite a few laughs.

I’m not really sure how Big Mama knew about my poems. I imagine that one day I must have shared one or two with her. Years later, I was writing a goodbye note to my Pops on the program for his funeral and then a dedication to him after he passes way for one of my college essays. Big Mama was so proud! I was just writing what I was feeling.

When I became an adult living on my own, Big Mama asked, “Why don’t you take all of those poems and put them in a book?” I had never thought about that. Those poems were written by a teenager and I didn’t think that anyone would be interested in what I was thinking or feeling.

I started a blog (Inspired-Serenity) years later and again connected to my true love of written expression. Yes later, I did write a book which was an expression of words to empower women. Big Mama was incredibly proud. She was my biggest supporter, promoter, seller, you name it.

Before she passed away two years ago, Big Mama asked, “When are you going to write your next book?” Well, I haven’t gotten to that point yet, but she gave me the courage to believe in myself and my gift of writing, so, I imagine it will be soon.

The Aching Soul

The aching of the soul is quite an experience not too recognizable at first. All that is apparent is that something is not right. Something doesn’t feel right. One may struggle to identify exactly what is wrong. It is a longing, a deep pain. It is something that, depending on your life circumstances, may have never been felt before. You try many things to shake the feeling: a walk, singing your favorite song, enjoying the sunlight, a deluxe pedicure, a new hair style, maybe even a new look. But day after day, the feeling comes along with you, in everything you do. You go back and forth between sadness, anger, weeping. Even the silence if your cry is deafening. Yet in your walk through life you act as if you are ok. Well, technically you are, right? On the other hand, you repeatedly ask yourself, what is this and how can you get rid of it.

Then you realize, it is indeed a deep aching feeling stemming from life’s painful experiences. Life has dealt you a hand and you have no idea what card to play. Oh yes, you have heard people speaking about the cries of their soul but never did you imagine that you would experience this level of agony within. This is more than you thought you had the capacity to handle. The blows to your life as you knew hurt deep. The assault on your soul has been clearly identified and now, you must figure out what comes next. You find yourself doubled over in pain as if you just received a gut punch. Deep down within your soul cries.

Your soul cries because it is wounded. Not only was it exposed to the pain, but it sustained the most serious wounds of all. In its sadness, the soul realizes that it did not protect you from the agony of life’s unfortunate circumstances. It failed to shield you from the storms swarming around you. Your soul fell deeper within, wrapping up into a tight cocoon seeking first to save itself. But that too failed. Not only did you suffer greatly, but your soul did as well. But the guilt of the soul, feeling like a failure continues to stir around within beaten and bruised hardly recognizable.

How can the direction of the tides be changed? Is anything salvageable on this journey? Is the damage too great to overcome? Who are you if your soul is wounded? How far can you possibly go? Your brokenness has become visable in many ways to the outside world, yet no one truly understands the battle to save your soul within. People simply do not know your story unless they walk it. In your quiet moments you wonder how to heal what once was.

A joint effort. Healing both the soul and your brokenness is a joint effort. You have to want to heal. You will have to be the strength for your own soul. You will need to vow to reach down deep inside and repair what is damaged.

Yes, there is pain

Yes, you have been wronged

Yes, they used you

Yes, they mistreated you

Yes, they misunderstood you

Yes, they discarded you

Yes, they took advantage of you

Yes the wounds are deep, but you can overcome. It will just take time and a lot of effort on your part.

Like a wounded child, you will have to nurse your soul back to a healthy state of existence. This comes when you recognize what happened and then resolving that those circumstances do not define you. Understand that your soul gets caught up in what the world says and does. Sometimes it feels like a betrayal, but it is often an effort to find its way in such a complicated world, Your soul tends to believe what it hears and internalize the things said to you and about you. You assign meaning to the actions of others in your life. You and your soul work in tandem to make it true and live it out as the reality in your life. This leads you to accepting things and people into your life that are not for you and abandoning who you truly are to accommodate what you have deemed to be true. But these thought and feeling patterns are often wrong and lead you down a path of pain and suffering, serving as a barrier to growth.

With this being said, its never too late. The pain can subside but it will not leave if your soul continues to water it and give it a place to live. What can counteract what the soul is doing within? The Spirit. Yes, the Spirit is the savior of your soul. The Spirit breaths life and light into dark places. It is more powerful than the soul but you have to be open and willing to create space for this integration to take place. Yes, it will be difficult at first. The soul will put up a fight because it has taken root in being the walking wounded and it has cultivated a space within for the pain to fester and live. The soul in part has accepted the fate that this is just how it will be from now on. The soul has lost almost every bit of strength and resolve. With the little fight left, the soul will choose to use its energy to oppose that the Spirit can fix what is deeply broken.

But the Spirit brings hope, faith and insurmountable peace. It is open to all regardless of the resistance of the soul. It brings a calmness and a feeling that you are not alone. In your quiet moments when you feel the Spirit come, hold your head back and let the tears fall. The Spirit has come to repair your soul and mend your brokenness. Receive it. You deserve to live a full life absent of the impending death of your soul. There will always be struggles in life, but when you allow the Spirit to lead you out of darkness and into the light, you will harness the power of what is before you. Most importantly of all, you will know that there is nothing that can separate you from the love of God and that you truly can be free.

In Moments of Vulnerability

In vulnerable times, we often hurt more than we know. We find ourselves in spaces that speak to the pain in our hearts, the disappointments in our eyes and the dissatisfaction of our souls and still we are here, there and in the midst of the most uncomfortable spaces time and time again. While we are pained in these moments in some cases we have to muster up the strength and the courage to exist even in a space where we feel we don’t belong or even a space we believe we are unfit for.

What do these moments mean? Why do we feel the urge to run? Should we run? Our humility gets the best of us in our vulnerable times . How then do we exist with gut wrenching pain and a twinge of embarrassment? Should we be embarrassed? Have we failed ourselves? To what ends must we remain in this space?

In these moments it is important for us to center our thought and emotions on what is true within ourselves and our experiences. We must hold firm to who we are and how we aim to show up in the world. We must focus on what we know about ourselves in spite of what we are feeling in the moment and in comparison to those around us.

We must resist the urge to compare ourselves to others. This will light a fire to our insecurities, failures insecurities and shortcomings. When we look around the room, we may feel small, invisible, irrelevant. But we must remember that we are not.

This test will grow you if you let it. Why? Because in the midst of your most humbling circumstances, when you can decide to hold your head up anyway, smile anyway and engage anyway, you will actually prove to yourself how strong you truly are. why is this important? Because you only need to truly prove your own worth to yourself.

Change Happens

It is not strange that we become tired, frustrated, and overwhelmed with what is. We need things to be different yet we want them to stay the same. As we lead in a world of uncertainty our roles become tainted by red tape, glass ceilings barriers and limits beyond our control.

Our passions, so great our goals so high, yet the trajectory of our paths is uncertain and full of things that do more to take us off course then keep us focused on the common goal. Yet our determination to yield results that will impact the world around us is so strong

Strong leaders know their worth and what they bring to the table and continuously seek opportunities to operate in their gifts, using their talents, skills and abilities to make a positive impact in their work. Strong leaders don’t give in to the disappointments, the setbacks the obstacles, and refuse to allow self defeat to control their next move

When we lead, we must understand that things will not always be the same. Change will happen whether we like it, accept it or not. When change comes you have to ask yourself ‘Why was I here in the first place’? This will help you withstand the winds of change and the ups and downs that come along wiwith it

Change happens. Be open to the process. Allow growth to take place. Learn what you can. Develop a new skill. Strengthen your tenacity, your grit, your will to stand strong among those that follow you in the midst of uncertainly. Change will come. It is inevitable but remember, there is always a place for great leaders.
